On the north-west shore of Bannow Bay, a short spin west of Wellington Bridge, a scatter of grey ruins stands in the pasture of a private farm. Clonmines, a deserted medieval borough that was once a well-known port of call with castles, a friary, a parish church dedicated to Santa Claus, two members of the Irish Parliament – and seventeen Viking silver ingots for good measure.
