Werner Siemens & the Gutta-Percha Tree

In 1847, a young German army engineer secures a contract from the Prussian Army to lay a subterranean telegraph line insulated, by sap from the gutta-percha tree. By doing so, he established a telegraph company that would evolve into the present-day global telecommunications and engineering giant, Siemens AG.
