From the 12th to early 13th century, a surge in Marian devotion coincided with the arrival of Early Gothic architecture in Ireland, strongly influenced by Wells Cathedral. Anglo‑Norman patrons, aided by west‑country masons and vast imports of Dundry stone, created ambitious churches at New Ross, Kilkenny, Duiske, Dunbrody and Athassel, with early Gothic additions at Christ Church, Dublin.
