Admiral William Smyth (c. 1799-1877): A Water-Colourist on the Seas

William Smyth was a Royal Navy officer, explorer and gifted watercolourist whose career spanned Pacific surveys, anti‑slavery patrols off Brazil, an Amazon expedition and a perilous Arctic voyage in HMS Terror. Closely linked to William McClintock Bunbury, he reached artistic maturity painting Rio de Janeiro and South American ports.
