In March 1849, the door of the Cashel Workhouse creaked open to admit a smartly dressed naval officer whose objective was to screen the young ladies in the workhouse and to decide which, if any, would be suitable for the Earl Grey Orphan scheme. Among the forty selected was 15-year-old sister Ellen Flynn. This is a saga of destitution and orchestrated redemption which I presented to actress Mandy Moore on ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ in 2018.
