The Earl Grey Orphan Scheme (1848-50)

An assisted emigration scheme brought 4,175 Irish teenage girls on a 12,000-mile journey to Australia between 1848 and 1850. Most of these ‘rosy-cheeked’ girls were taken directly from Irish workhouses.
